Original Schoolhouse Site, now League City Historical Society

Add to plan Remove from plan

Former Site of the Clear Creek School c. 1894 and the Little Green Schoolhouse c. 1901

J. C. League donated this land in 1894 for a school, and a one-room school called Clear Creek School was built facing Second Street. However the 1900 Storm destroyed that school, so in 1901 a little green two-room school was built called The Little Green Schoolhouse. It was used as a school until 1980 when it was in need of repairs and was ordered to be torn down by the city fire marshal.

The only building remaining on this property was a concrete block building that was built in 1939 and used as the first fire station in League City. That structure is still standing, but is now covered in wood taken from the Barger Barn that once stood here in town. When a new fire station was built in 1948, the newly formed Clear Creek school district used this building for a bus barn. The building is now a local history museum and also is the headquarters for the Country School Association of America with school artifacts from all over the country.
In December 1992, the League City Historical Society, a non-profit organization acquired the property and moved the schoolhouse from Chambers County to League City to save the history of all three schools.

League City Historical Society brings history lovers together with Walkabout Tours of historic sites, educational programming, the Landmark Medallion Registry and Live Oak Tree Registry. They provide educational programs for all ages in the community and sponsors the West Bay Common Schoolhouse hands-on history experience.
